For the first time since the start of the Soccer World Cups, it will be held in Africa. It will take place from June 11 to July 11, 2010. The election of South Africa for this world cup has been very controversial. Most World Cups had been held in Europe and America since the first one in 1930. FIFA or "Fédération internationale de football association" is responsible for organizing the World Cup since its formation on May 21, 1904. Its headquarters are in Zurich, Switzerland. FIFA is formed by 208 soccer federations from around the world. After Germany hosted the last World Cup, it was decided that from then on the host of it would be from a different continent every time in rotation. For the election of the 2010 World Cup, only countries from Africa were allowed to be candidates. Between South Africa, Egypt, Lybia, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunez, South Africa was declared the winner as host of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. South Africa is in the southern tip of Africa. It has an extension of 1,219,912 km2, and is aproximatelly twice the size of Texas. It has a border with the following countries: Botswana 1,840 km, Lesotho 909 km, Mozambique 491 km, Namibia 967 km, Swaziland 430 km and Zimbabwe 225 km. It has approximately 49,052,489 people living in it. The host cities for the 2010 World Cup are: Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria y Rustenberg. There will be 32 teams fighting for the cup, as host South Africa will be one of them.
